Woven Wood Shades

Woven wood shades – naturally warm, highly attractive, and exotic.

With names like "Tapei," "Sumatra," "Singapore," and "Tibet" woven wood window shades can give any room an exotic and exciting look.  Woven fabrics are hand crafted with natural materials, traditional styling and a little modern technology.  These environmentally friendly window treatments are durable and easy to care for…making them a great choice for kitchens, bedrooms, or any living area.

All Natural

Woven wood shades are made from grasses, reeds, woods and bamboo.  Each piece is cut to length and stitched together side by side to create the fabric.

Fabric Styles

Naturally occurring colors and textures are what make woven woods so popular.  From soft brown grasses to solid tan and white reeds, woven wood shades never fail to delight.  Here are just a few of the available choices…

Sunlight Control and Privacy

Every individual woven wood fabric has its own unique characteristics.  Fabrics made predominantly from grasses, will allow significantly more sunlight, and will offer little in the way of privacy.  In fact, some of these fabrics appear to "vanish" from view when seen in front of strong background sunlight. While there are a few fabrics that utilize a series of overlapping reeds and woods, most woven woods require some type of additional lining to achieve total light control and privacy.  There are two types of liners used with woven wood shades.

A light filtering liner is a fabric that allows light to pass through. This is the most common type of liner used.

A blackout liner uses a non- translucent fabric backing that prevents any sunlight from passing through. Blackout shades are the perfect choice for media rooms, and bedrooms. They are especially popular with people who need to sleep during daylight hours.

Liners come in either white or ivory.

Fabric liners used with woven wood shades can either be sewn directly onto the back of the woven material (see below) or made to operate totally separate.  An operable liner combined with a woven shade can truly offer the best of natural beauty and function.

Lift and Lower Operation

Basic operation is from the bottom of the window up to the top – called "bottom/up." However, operation from the top of the window to the bottom is also possible – called "top/down".  "Top/down" operation allows the top of the shade to be lowered to a point where those standing inside the window can see out, but still have maintain some privacy.  If ultimate control is desired, these amazing shades can be also made with both "bottom/up" and "top/down" operation.

Lift Cords

Window shades made from woven wood are designed to operate with cords.  Cord cleats are available that allow excess cords to be managed safely.  It is also possible to replace the standard cord lift mechanism with a continuous loop chain and clutch

Edge Binding

Edge binding on woven shades is used to add visual interest and, in some cases, to protect the ends of the reeds and grasses from damage.  In fact, with some fabrics, edge binding is highly recommended.  Edge binding is made by folding a 1" or 2" cotton fabric over the four edges of the woven wood and sewing the two sides together.  Cotton tapes come in both solid colors and decorative patterns.  Here are some of the available choices.
