People often ask about the differences between real wood and faux wood?
Here is some information that may help you decide which is the better choice.
Real Wood
- Advantages:
- the genuine warmth and feel of wood – nothing compares to the rich tones and variations of true wood
- more choice of colors and stains
- ability to generally match existing wood trim, cabinetry or furniture
- lighter weight
- easier to clean - a. fewer ladders to interfere with cleaning b. sealed wood surfaces repel dust easier than vinyl surfaces
- ability to come in slightly larger sizes
- Disadvantages
- more expensive
- adversely affected by moisture and heat
- stained woods can fade over time due to exposure to UV rays
Faux Wood
- Advantages
- Less expensive
- Less affected by moisture and heat
- Colors are more resistant to fading
- Disadvantages
- Heavier – requiring more ladders
- More difficult to clean – a. more ladders to interfere with cleaning b. vinyl surfaces tend to hold dust in place
- More limited size options due to sagging
Note: the disadvantages of faux wood are even greater with products commonly sold as “budget” blinds from some online vendors. They may look good at first but over time the lower quality will begin to show. Remember, the most important part of a blind is hidden in the head rail. Plastic components are rarely an equal subsitute for metal.
