Routed ladders are the standard option on horizontal window blinds. Ladders are the strings on the blind that provide both the lift and tilt movements. Routed ladders are named for the fact that the lift strings are routed vertically through a series of holes in the slats. The number of lift cords (and holes) is dependent on the width of the window blind. The holes allow some uncontrolled light to pass through the blinds and also reduce the amount of privacy gained by having the blinds in the fully closed position. The light and privacy issues are very minimal and usually aren't a concern except in TV rooms and bathrooms.
Routless string ladders are an optional upgrade on most types of horizontal window blinds. Routless ladders use an intricate string pattern to eliminate the need to run the lift string though the slats. This means that no holes are required. When routless ladders are in the fully closed position, the amount of sunlight passing through the blind is greatly reduced and there is absolutely no visibility from the outside.
Cotton tape ladders are also an optional upgrade. Tape ladders come in solid colors or decorative patterns. With cotton tapes, the outer strings are replaced with fabric strips about 1" wide. Not only does the fabric block sun light and improve privacy, it also adds a rich, classic elegance to any wood or faux wood window blinds.
