Hurricane Protection Product Comparison
Texas Window Solutions offers two exciting types of low-cost hurricane protection for windows. Here is a comparison of the two products we have.
Storm-Stoppers
- corrugated polycarbonate panels
- Impact Rated for Wind Zones 1 & 2 (up to 130 mph)
- uses 3M Dual Lock fasteners
- translucent
- light weight (1/3 the weight of plywood)
- used in place of plywood
- allows easy egress through a window if needed during an emergency
- Can be home-owner installed (no labor charge) or dealer installed
- 2 year warranty
- cannot be stored in sunlight but heat is not a problem
- $7-$10/square foot with dealer install or about $185 +/- $15 per 3′X6′ window
- currently not approved by the Texas Department of Insurance at this time
- usually 1 – 2 weeks delivery & install time time
Cat 5 Screens
- polypropylene mesh fabric
- aluminum bars at top and bottom
- bolted at 8″ on center across window header and sill
- requires wing nuts or screws to be installed
- Impact rated up to 187 mph
- some visibility through mesh
- allows egress through window if need during an emergency using a sharp knife
- can span an entire porch, wall, garage door, or virtually any opening size
- can be rolled up into protective pouch above opening between storms or taken down and stored
- available in 4 standard colors or 4 premium colors
- dealer installed only
- 10 year pro-rated warranty
- approved by the Texas Department of Insurance
- $12-13/square foot or about $215 per 3′X6′ window
- 2 – 4 weeks delivery & install time
- similar products are available starting at $10 square foot, but they do not have the higher impact rating that Cat 5 has
